アルバインは、680年のカルバラで命を落とした預言者ムハンマドの孫、フサイン・イブン・アリーを記憶する日です。名称はアラビア語の「40」に由来し、アーシューラーから40日目を指します。Arbaeen remembers Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who was killed at Karbala in 680. Its name comes from the Arabic word for “forty” and marks forty days after Ashura.
彼の物語は、宗教の枠を超えて、尊厳・正義・犠牲という普遍的な問いを投げかけます。現代の巡礼では、その記憶が「他者のために何ができるか」という行動へ変わります。His story raises universal questions of dignity, justice and sacrifice. In the modern pilgrimage, that memory becomes a practical question: what can we do for another person?

日本では、アルバインはまだ広く知られていません。このページは、宗教的な勧誘や主張を目的とせず、歴史・文化・社会・人間の視点から、その背景を静かに紹介するためにつくられました。Arbaeen is still little known in Japan. This page was created not as religious promotion, but as a calm introduction to its historical, cultural, social and human dimensions.

巡礼者は数日をかけて歩きます。疲れた人に水を渡し、荷物を持ち、知らない人に休む場所を譲る。道そのものが、助け合いの社会になります。Pilgrims walk for several days. They offer water to the tired, carry one another’s bags and make room for strangers to rest. The road itself becomes a society of mutual care.

モウキブ × おもてなしMAWKIB × OMOTENASHI
代金ではなく、
「どうぞ」という言葉。Not a price, but an invitation: “Please.”
道沿いの「モウキブ」では、地域の人々やボランティアが食事、水、休憩場所、医療、靴の手入れまで無償で提供します。見返りを求めず相手を思う姿は、日本の「おもてなし」と響き合います。At roadside mawkibs, local families and volunteers provide food, water, rest, medical care—even shoe cleaning—without charge. This care without expectation resonates with the Japanese idea of omotenashi.

06国境を越える道A ROAD ACROSS BORDERS

同じ道を歩く。People arrive from across the world and share the same road.
中心となるのはイスラム教シーア派の巡礼者ですが、他のイスラム教徒や異なる宗教・文化的背景を持つ参加者も訪れます。アルバインは、違いを消すのではなく、違いを持ったまま互いに助け合う場でもあります。Most participants are Shia Muslims, while other Muslims and visitors from different religious and cultural backgrounds also attend. Arbaeen does not erase difference; it offers a space where people can care for one another across it.

02なぜ「アルバイン」と呼ばれるのですか？Why is it called “Arbaeen”?＋
「アルバイン」はアラビア語で「40」または「40番目」を意味します。イスラム文化では、亡くなった人を40日目に記憶する習慣があります。Arbaeen means “forty” or “the fortieth” in Arabic. In Islamic cultures, the fortieth day after a death is an important moment of remembrance.

歩くことは、フサインの記憶に時間をかけて向き合い、他の人と苦労や助け合いを共有する行為です。最も知られるナジャフからカルバラの道は約80kmです。Walking gives pilgrims time to reflect on Husayn’s memory and to share effort, hardship and care with others. The best-known route from Najaf to Karbala is around 80 km.
05なぜ食事やサービスが無料なのですか？Why are food and services free?＋
巡礼者を助けること自体が大切な奉仕と考えられているためです。家庭や地域、ボランティアが費用と労力を持ち寄り、見返りを求めず提供します。Serving pilgrims is itself regarded as a meaningful act. Families, communities and volunteers contribute money and labour, offering help without expecting payment or reward.
06イスラム教徒だけの行事ですか？Is it only for Muslims?＋
シーア派イスラム教徒が中心ですが、他のイスラム教徒や、異なる宗教・文化的背景を持つ訪問者も参加しています。見学や取材、ボランティアとして訪れる人もいます。Shia Muslims form the majority, but other Muslims and visitors from different religious and cultural backgrounds also attend—as observers, journalists or volunteers.
07メッカ巡礼（ハッジ）とは同じですか？Is it the same as Hajj?＋
異なります。ハッジはメッカで行われるイスラム教の宗教的義務の一つです。アルバインはイラクのカルバラへ向かう任意の巡礼で、目的・場所・歴史が異なります。No. Hajj is a religious obligation performed in Mecca. Arbaeen is a voluntary pilgrimage to Karbala in Iraq, with a different location, history and purpose.
